About Dickens
Dickens

Dickens was a pioneering champion in the world of animal assisted therapy. An early ambassador in this emerging field, his calm, majestic demeanor, patience and noble bearing opened doors that had been firmly shut against such programs. His ability to comfort, understand and empathically connect with those in need made him beloved, not only to his human stewards, but to the entire community.

Dickens was inducted into the New Jersey Medical Veterinarians Association Hall of Fame, was presented with the Delta Society's top honors in therapy at the Tufts Animal Expo in Boston, was the first canine to be co-honored by a President's Award from New York University, and along with his human steward, was the recipient of many other community awards based on helping those with mental or physical disabilities.

Throughout the 1990's and early in this decade, he piloted psychiatric animal assisted therapy programs at Hackensack University Medical Center, Englewood Hospital and Holy Name Hospital which continue today. Dickens appeared on numerous television shows such as Inside Edition with Deborah Norville, Speaking of Pets and other shows highlighting the benefits of animal assisted therapy.

But most importantly, he was the beloved companion of his human steward, who continues to miss him every day. Dickens was only 9.5 years old when he crossed Rainbow Bridge. The outpouring of love for the life he so valiantly gave to help others had an entire community in mourning. His life and death were front page features in NJ media. To this day, his partner is still approached by those who remember his life and were touched by his love.

This website is dedicated to Dickens and beloved companions everywhere who enrich our lives with joy, grace, acceptance and love.
